Alvise Pérez, the controversial leader of Spain’s new far-right party SALF, has launched a raffle to win the salary he received following his election to the European Parliament in June, but anyone entering the draw will have to provide a raft of personal data that experts say could breach national and EU data protection rules.

As expected, he announced on Saturday that he finally regretted the decision he announced in June to draw his MEPs’ net monthly salary of €8,089 in a lottery.

“I just received my salary as an MEP. In a moment I will explain in the video why I decided not to hand over my salary but to keep it in response to all the attacks from journalists, political parties and haters,” Perez wrote on Saturday evening.

After his statement sparked a wave of comments on social media, the SALF leader confirmed his 900,000 followers on Instagram — and the more than 800,000 people (4.59%) who voted for him in the EU elections — have been waiting for the draw for more than two months.
“This video is to officially announce the start of the extraction of my entire salary because I am not a damn parasite like other politicians who live off the criminal system,” Perez said.
However, to enter the sweepstakes, you will need to enter a lot of personal information, such as Name, surname, address, ID number, phone number, email, and Instagram account name are required.
Furthermore, the potential winner of the “award” would have to accept that the data could be “used for one or more specific purposes” that have not yet been disclosed by Perez or SALF and that go against the principle of “full transparency” that Perez himself had set for his future work as a Member of the European Parliament.
Some legal experts consider this data transfer “excessive” because it could conflict with current Spanish regulations that guarantee confidentiality and privacy, while the Spanish Data Protection Authority is wary of this right.
As the SALF leader explained, the “lottery” would be repeated at the end of each month and “I would be collecting a public salary from this lousy system”.
