18 July 2024 (Juba) – A German non-governmental organization has donated €200,000 to support refugees and host communities in South Sudan.
The Malta International Organization said it was responding to the dire humanitarian situation in Sudan caused by the intensification of conflict between hostile forces for more than a year.
“The situation in South Sudan’s northern border region is particularly bad. Over the past few weeks, our emergency aid teams have assessed the situation in the village of Renk and in a refugee camp near the capital, Juba. In Renk, people are living in overcrowded shelters with little shelter. They have almost nothing. Many children are suffering from severe conjunctivitis,” said Mathis Biermann, Malta International’s Country Officer for South Sudan.
The conflict in Sudan has been going on for more than a year, and more and more people are seeking refuge in South Sudan to escape hunger and violence.
According to the United Nations, there are now more than 740,000 refugees who have crossed the border into South Sudan since the war began.
In addition, the world’s youngest country has 2 million internally displaced people due to conflict, insecurity and climate change.
The German NGO said it plans to build around 100 toilets, set up handwashing stations and distribute hygiene products and drinking water in the coming weeks.
The government also said it would provide cash assistance to about 600 particularly vulnerable families, adding that a total of about 5,000 families would receive assistance.
“We are eager to build new shelter for the refugees, but we urgently need donations to make this happen,” stressed Biermann.
Malteser International has been operating in South Sudan since 1996, working on projects focused on nutrition, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), and health.
