July 7, 2024 (Juba) – South Sudan’s long-awaited elections will be held on December 22, the National Electoral Commission (NEC) of South Sudan has announced.
The chairman of the National Electoral Commission, Professor Abednegom Akok, told reporters on Friday that the proposed date is in line with Section 16 (1) of the National Elections Act 2023.
“They have a so-called electoral calendar. According to the electoral calendar, we were supposed to start registration in June, but because there was no agreement among the political parties, we could not do it. But now, with the announcement of the election day, these will be the points to raise or work with them,” he said.
The chairman of the National Electoral Commission said the voter registration process was supposed to start in June as planned, but the parties have yet to reach an agreement on the elections.
However, he announced that the NEC will start voter registration after fixing the election date.
“The public already knows that from now on, we will hold elections, we will start voter registration, all electronic activities will be carried out until December. Then from December, the elections will be held immediately,” he said, adding that sufficient preparations have been made.
“Members of the committee have been undergoing training, we have gone to the states and on Saturday members of the committee will arrive in Juba for training,” Professor Akoke stressed.
According to the Chairman, all activities of the NEC are guided by the peace agreement, adding that it is the responsibility of the Commission to announce the date of elections.
“For us in the commission, we are technical people and will implement the protocol as it is. If we do not announce the election date today, then there will be a political loophole,” he said.
Last month, the chairman of the National Electoral Commission established electoral commissions for South Sudan’s 10 states and appointed the heads of those commissions. He did not establish commissions for Abyei, Greater Pibor and Ruun administrative areas.
South Sudanese are eager to take part in their first post-independence elections, which were held in March 2010 and won by incumbent President Salva Kiir with more than 90 percent of the vote.
