The Korean broadcaster has a major presence at the Paris 2024 Olympics with a team of more than 70 people, including 15 producers and 20 staff working remotely from Seoul. The broadcaster has sent eight journalists and eight ENG teams to cover major sporting events such as fencing, swimming and archery, as well as the opening and closing ceremonies.
Choi Ho Kyong, head of the Outside Broadcast Technology Team, said KBS receives all signals from OBS via SDI and produces two channels of 1080p50 content at the International Broadcast Centre (IBC) in Paris, which is then converted to 1080p60 for broadcast in Korea. The two over-the-air channels are produced in separate production rooms within the IBC and transmitted for broadcast. The master control room manages all incoming feeds.
Unlike other copyright holders who produce content domestically, KBS decided to produce in Paris, which reduces the bandwidth required to transmit content back to Korea. Seven fiber optic channels facilitate the transmission of two terrestrial channels, cable channels and news distribution.
Eight ENG teams used LiveU technology to send the signal directly to Korea. Rather than using a studio inside the IBC, KBS chose to use iconic locations around Paris as backdrops for the show. The two presenters were touring Paris to record the introduction and other segments.
The opening and closing ceremonies, as well as the swimming, fencing and archery competitions, were all covered by on-site commentators, while about 10 commentary teams based in Seoul provided offline commentary for other events.
