South Korean ski team suffers three fatalities in Geraldine accident

The three people killed in yesterday’s accident in Geraldine were part of the South Korean national ski team.

The two vehicles collided, killing three people and seriously injuring two others.

The team will travel to New Zealand to compete in the Winter Games, which kick off in Queenstown tomorrow, Stuff reports.

Emergency crews were called to the accident at the intersection of State Highway 79 and Kennedy Road around 3:15 p.m. yesterday.

In a statement yesterday, police officer Vicki Walker said the two vehicles, a four-wheel drive and a people carrier truck, were travelling in opposite directions when the accident occurred.

“Two vehicles have collided and the investigation will focus on how the accident occurred.”

Officer Walker said the three people who died were all in the MRT vehicle at the time. Another passenger who was traveling with them was seriously injured.

The driver of the 4WD was travelling alone and suffered serious injuries.

Two injured people were airlifted to Christchurch Hospital.

Inspector Walker said: “The loss of so many lives at once is shocking and our hearts go out to the victims.”

Officer Walker said the deceased was part of a tour group visiting the area and was followed by other members of the group when the accident occurred.
