The International Court of Justice is hearing South Africa’s genocide case against Israel.

South Africa filed the lawsuit in December, accusing Israel of committing genocide in Gaza and demanding an end to its brutal military attacks.

Amid global calls for a ceasefire in Gaza, some countries welcomed the move.

Meanwhile, Israeli attacks on Gaza have killed at least 23,357 people and injured more than 59,410 since October 7.

More than 600 Israelis sign petition supporting ICJ ruling

A total of 633 Israelis signed a petition calling on the International Court of Justice to rule in favor of South Africa.

Anat Matar, a senior lecturer at Tel Aviv University’s philosophy department who helped organise the petition, told Al Jazeera: “We decided to add the voices of Israeli citizens to South Africa’s call primarily because it appears to be the most feasible way to immediately put an end to the atrocities committed daily by Israeli forces in Gaza and provide much-needed humanitarian aid to prevent an even greater catastrophe.”

She said the signatories were not legal experts and they did not know whether what was happening in Gaza met the “formal definition of genocide.”

However, she said they saw what was happening and it “had to stop immediately”.
