The explosion killed 37 people and injured more than 60 people
Somali police spokesman Abdifatah Adan Hassan explained that after the explosion, other armed men attacked the seaside in the capital Mogadishu, where many Somalis often gather for leisure on weekends.
Some Somali media reported that the attack was carried out by members of the terrorist organization al-Shabaab, which is based in many areas of southern and central Somalia.
Al Jazeera reported that those killed in the attack included people swimming at “Lido Beach,” a place frequented by many people in Mogadishu, especially on weekends.
The attack, which took place on the evening of Thursday, August 2, 2024, was claimed by al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Shabaab.
Information provided by the police and a person at the scene said that while the first bomber threw it at the main door of the Beach View Hotel, many other militants immediately started firing more bullets, trying to enter the hotel, and others opened fire inside the hotel. People were sitting by the water, while others were walking in the bathing area.
Al-Shabaab was responsible for the operation
Somali police spokesman Abdifatah Adan Hassan told the media: “The attack killed about 37 civilians and injured 63 others, including seriously injured. Security forces killed all attackers and took hostage one of them who was driving a car full of explosives. In the confrontation with these militants, one Somali soldier was killed and another was injured.
“Everyone was so scared and it was difficult to know what it was because shooting started immediately after the bomb went off,” Abdilatif, one of the witnesses, told French news agency AFP. “Some people were lying on the ground and others were trying to escape. I saw people lying on the ground, some dead and some injured.”
The Somali government condemned the terrorist attack reported by official media on Saturday, August 3, 2024.
Former Somali Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khair said through X’s social media, “I express my deep solidarity with the families, friends and relatives of all those who died in the attack.”
