MOGADISHU (HOL) – The Somali government arrested several military officers on Friday night in response to a deadly attack by al-Shabaab on a popular beachfront hotel in Mogadishu.
The attack targeted the Lido Beach View Hotel, killing at least 35 people and injuring 126.
Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre announced the arrests and said tough measures were being taken and that police officers on duty at Lido Beach would be held accountable, but he did not disclose the number or identities of the arrested officers.
The prime minister made the statement after visiting Erdogan Hospital, where some injured civilians were being treated. He stressed that after being defeated on the battlefield, Al-Shabaab targeted public places, especially young people.
Prime Minister Barre called the attack a “barbaric atrocity” that violates the values of Somalia’s religion and culture. He called on all parties to provide unified support for the victims and the ongoing emergency operations. He also expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
Following the attack, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Barre held an emergency security meeting in Mogadishu to discuss the situation and discuss measures to bolster security in the capital.
In March this year, the government Arrested Sixteen people have been charged in the March 14 attack on the upscale SYL Hotel near the presidential palace in Mogadishu. The National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) of Somalia said the suspects included a man who was accused of being the “mastermind” of the attack. NISA accused the main suspect of assisting al-Shabaab militants in smuggling vehicles used in the attack.
