The Somali National Army and local forces have taken control of the Buwen district in Hiran after a successful crackdown on Al-Shabaab militants.
BELEIDEWEYNE (HOL) — Somalia’s government and local forces have retaken key territory in the Hiran region from the al-Shabaab militant group, officials said.
According to official reports, the Somali National Army and local allies have taken control of the main strongholds of Bulwain and Shaw in western Hiran. The operation did not cause any casualties.
Jalalaq West District Chairman Noor Mohammed Abusug confirmed to state media that the government and local forces have full control over Burwayn and Shaw.
The progress comes amid broader efforts by the Somali government and regional forces to dismantle al-Shabaab. Occupied several areas The areas of Lagta Kubi and Gorad Amo in Lower Juba State are part of the operation to clear the road between Kismayo and Afmadow.
The capture of Bulwain and Shaw is expected to significantly weaken the influence of al-Shabaab in western Hiran. The operation follows a devastating attack by al-Shabaab in the Jalalaq West district the previous night. Al-Shabaab has controlled Bulwain and Shaw for more than a decade.
