MOGADISHU (HOL) – The Somalia Council of Ministers on Thursday approved the audit of government institutions for the 2023 fiscal year during its weekly meeting chaired by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre in Mogadishu.
The committee discussed the report on the processes and procedures taken to ensure transparency and accountability within government agencies, but did not share the report with independent media.
During the meeting, the Council approved a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Fisheries and Blue Economy and Abu Dhabi Ports Group. The MoU is based on cooperation and development of Somalia’s maritime sector. However, no specific information about the MoU was provided.
The Council also discussed recent security issues, in particular the recent seizure of weapons by residents of the Abdwak area of Gedo region, following clashes between government forces and local militias while escorting two trucks of weapons seized from illegal arms dealers.
The Minister of State for Environment and Climate Change also briefed on the recent inter-ethnic conflict in Luke District, Gedo State. The central government, with the support of the Jubbaland Regional Government, successfully brokered a ceasefire and initiated dialogue to resolve the conflict.
The Ministries of Interior and Defense stressed that the government is working hard to strengthen national security and combat terrorist groups in Somalia.
The latest attack killed more than 100 al-Shabaab militants as they attempted to seize three military bases in the Lower Juba region. Government forces repelled the attack and safely detonated four car bombs about 80 kilometers (50 miles) southwest of the port city of Kismayo in Jubbaland state.
The Security Council highly appreciates the achievements made by the Somali National Army in recent years in eliminating terrorist threats and maintaining peace in various regions.
