MOGADISHU (HOL) – A Somali government delegation led by Foreign Minister Ahmed Malam Faki left for Turkey on Sunday to attend talks between Somalia and Ethiopia facilitated by the Turkish government.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a press release that the Somali government is committed to protecting the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Turkey has expressed its willingness to mediate the diplomatic dispute between Somalia and Ethiopia. However, Somalia and Ethiopia have not yet provided further details about the meeting and its date.
Recently, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to discuss the growing tensions between Addis Ababa and Mogadishu.
The tensions were sparked by a deal signed in January between Ethiopia and Somaliland, a self-proclaimed republic in northern Somalia. As part of the deal, Ethiopia agreed to formally recognize Somaliland in exchange for a 50-year lease for the Ethiopian navy to use 20 kilometers of the Red Sea channel.
Somalia has previously refused any discussion with Ethiopia over a deal for Addis Ababa to lease a port in the breakaway region of Somaliland and warned Addis Ababa not to interfere in its internal affairs.
