A Solomon Islands government delegation recently attended the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development in New York and successfully submitted the country’s second Voluntary National Review (VNR) on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The report is a requirement for all UN member states that have agreed to report on progress towards the 2030 Agenda.
With the support of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP), the Ministry of National Planning and Development Coordination (MNPDC) together with other line ministries, non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations and the private sector assessed not only the progress made but also the challenges faced in the implementation of the SDGs in the country.
Presenting the VNR report at the United Nations Headquarters last week, His Excellency Rexon Ramofafia, Minister of National Development and Development of Montgomery and Head of the delegation to the High-Level Political Forum, stressed that the second VNR report highlighted that while some progress had been made on the five SDGs under review, progress was uneven and still difficult to sustain on some SDG indicators.
The five specific SDGs selected for assessment this year are: SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
This is part of the HLPF’s regular reporting process, where all Member States are required to provide updates on their progress in implementing the SDGs.
Minister Ramo Fafia added that climate change continues to threaten people’s livelihoods and the sustainability of economies and communities.
“Our vulnerability to climate change is deeply embedded in the development challenges we face. The increasing frequency and intensity of natural disasters are placing enormous economic and social burdens on governments and people.”
“For us, the key to solving the security and peace of the islands lies in development”, His Excellency Ramo Fafia stressed.
The Voluntary National Review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of Solomon Islands’ efforts and progress towards achieving the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals.
The presentation also included a short video highlighting some of the progress made in the implementation of the SDGs.
The Global Goals and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development commit to ending poverty and hunger, realizing human rights for all, achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls, and ensuring the lasting protection of the planet and its natural resources.
