The Japanese Embassy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have signed a grant agreement for Japan to Solomon Islands Human Resource Development Scholarship.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Peter Shanel Angovaka, and the Ambassador of Japan to the Solomon Islands, His Excellency Yoshiaki Miwa, signed the exchange of notes and the grant agreement in Honiara on Tuesday.
The scholarship is worth 109,000,000 Japanese Yen, equivalent to 8,004,000 Swazi Liland dollars, and will help 20 local students Master’s programs in the fields of Japanese public policy, public financial management, international relations, climate change/environmental policy, etc.
This aid is part of a bilateral aid programme to support human resource development in the Solomon Islands.
Minister Angowaka said at the signing ceremony that the aid represented the deep bilateral relationship between the two countries.
He said education is a powerful tool that can open doors of opportunity, progress and prosperity to any country and can undoubtedly equip those who wish to acquire the necessary skills to assist in shaping public policies and better serve the people.
Ambassador Miwa also said that the Solomon Islands faces development challenges, not only lacking technical personnel and management capabilities, but also lacking administrative and legislative frameworks.
“We need to elevate this system into a viable engine to increase productivity, so improving the capabilities of administrative officials is exactly what we are aiming for,” Miwa said.
He said the Japan Development Scholarship was aimed at assisting human resource development in the Solomon Islands and enhancing the productive relationship between the two countries.
It will allow each successful recipient to participate in the development and implementation of social and economic development programs upon return to their home country.
