The American social network X announced today the closure of its Brazilian branch, effective immediately. The service itself should continue to be available in the country. X said it was responding to the actions of Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes, who threatened to arrest its lawyers if the network did not comply with his ruling. The dispute concerns requests to block accounts linked to supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro.

The lawyer issued the threat in a secret resolution, a copy of which she shared in a follow-up post in Portuguese, Morais Network reported. “Even though our multiple appeals to the Supreme Court have not yet been heard, even though the Brazilian public has not yet learned of the rulings, and even though our Brazilian employees have no responsibility or control over whether content is blocked on our platform, Morais chose to threaten us instead, in order to respect the law and due process,”The company said it was closing factories in the country for the safety of its employees.

The above resolution was also shared on the Internet a few days ago. ”The letter called for censorship of popular accounts in Brazil, including those of a priest, a current congressman and the wife of a former congressman. We believe the Brazilian people deserve to know what we are asking of us,”The company commented.

According to Reuters, earlier this year, Morais had ordered Company X to block its accounts in an effort to investigate so-called “digital militias” linked to the government of former far-right President Jair Bolsonaro, who were accused of spreading hate messages and fake news.

The network first blocked the accounts, but then the company’s owner, billionaire Elon Musk, announced he would reactivate them. The judge then opened a lawsuit against X. In the past, the X network operated under the name Twitter. Musk bought the company for $44 billion in October of the previous year, and since then the company has undergone extensive changes. In addition to the name change, these measures include firing most employees and relaxing content regulation rules.
