Standard Bank, in partnership with Red Hat, will run a training programme in computer matters from July 15 to August 30, with the aim of contributing to the development of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Mozambique who work in the technological sector.
The partnership with the North American company Red Hat, which provides solutions based on the GNU/Linux operating system in addition to open source software solutions, demonstrates the bank’s commitment to future technologies and, in particular, the country’s next generation of talent.
“This partnership also represents Standard Bank’s contribution to Mozambique’s efforts to overcome the barriers that hinder its technological advancement,” explained Dayse Madeira Correia, marketing and brand management director at Standard Bank, during a training session at the opening of the project, held on Monday July 15, in Maputo.
As Dayse Madeira Correia mentioned, the SME training will be carried out by 25 young developers from the MozDevz community, who will be equipped with key skills in automation, management and development, areas essential for the success of the digital economy. This is a long-term program that, in addition to classroom courses, includes the development of specific projects monitored by Red Hat, but also awareness-raising courses held in public schools across the country, aimed at awakening young people’s interest in technology and knowledge. He explained that it has the potential to solve community problems.
Therefore, the bank believes that this program represents an important step in building a more prosperous future for Mozambique, because investing in the education of young talents and the development of small and medium-sized enterprises is an investment in the future of the country. Red Hat instructor Sergey Guzenkov said that graduates will be equipped with technological tools to not only do better but also improve their work, master Linux technologies and manage systems in a secure and efficient way.
“Linux is the operating system used by most servers in the world. All Android phones are Linux. In Microsoft data centers, most systems are Linux. There are 500 supercomputers in the world that run on Linux, so Linux is the present and the future. Therefore, students will learn how to get more benefits from Linux,” he said.
Odilia Nhacundela, vice-president of MozDevz, the largest developer community in Mozambique, considers it an honor to be part of this program, whose selection criteria require, among other things, to be an Information Technology (IT) engineer, trained or working in the fields of automation, management and systems engineering, or even to have participated in the Red Hat Hackhaton 2022 in Maputo: “May the knowledge acquired be at the service of the technological development of the country”, he concludes.
It is noteworthy that the implementation of the program started with the identification of key technical skills for the domestic market, of which three skills were identified, namely automation, development and system administration. Subsequently, a partner (Red Hat) was identified and an immersion course was conducted, which ultimately resulted in the selection of 25 course graduates, of which 6 were women and 19 were men.
