Mexico City (France24) – The Slovenian Parliament, following in the footsteps of Spain, Ireland and Norway, approved by a majority vote on Tuesday, June 4, the recognition of an independent Palestinian state.
Slovenia recognized the existence of a sovereign and independent Palestinian state on Tuesday, June 4, after parliament approved a proposal by the center-left government by 52 votes in favor and none against.
The conservative party led by former Prime Minister Janez Jansa and the opposition SDS did not take part in the vote in the 90-seat House of Representatives, arguing that the coalition had violated parliamentary rules, while representatives of the equally conservative National Socialists abstained.
Conservatives, who are trying to delay the vote by calling a referendum on the issue, have condemned the centre-left coalition for making the recognition a campaign theme ahead of this week’s European elections.
In addition, the opposition believes that recognizing a Palestinian state is not timely and could be seen as rewarding terrorism.
By the decision of Tuesday, June 4, Slovenia recognizes the existence of the State of Palestine, with the borders of 1967 or those agreed upon by the parties in a future peace agreement.
According to the adopted text, the government, led by Liberal Prime Minister Robert Golob, believes that a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine can guarantee lasting peace in the Middle East.
In addition, he believes that this will increase international pressure on Israel and the radical Islamic terrorist organization Hamas to agree to a lasting ceasefire and release the more than one hundred Israeli hostages still held in Gaza.
Slovenia, a member of the European Union and NATO, joins Spain, Norway and Ireland, which recognized Palestine last week.
