On August 19, 2024, four people jumped from a ray boat due to rough seas between Gizo and Vella Lavella islands and were rescued by Gizo police.
The rescue took place when a 60-horsepower Yamaha boat encountered rough seas and four people jumped overboard as the boat almost capsized.
There were six passengers on board the plane, including three women, two men and a 14-year-old boy.
Seeing the boat taking on water, three passengers, including a 14-year-old boy, immediately jumped out of the boat, while the captain and a female passenger stayed inside and managed to overcome the rough seas to reach the first island and then Gizo.
The captain dropped off the female passenger and all the market produce, sought help from another boat and returned to the spot where the four passengers had jumped overboard.
When they arrived, the passengers had been swept away by the strong current.
The Gizo police and their relatives in Gizo were notified and launched a search and rescue operation. With the support of other small boats, including a police stabilizer boat, the four missing persons were rescued in the afternoon.
This passenger ship sails from Vella Lavella in the north to Gizo and specializes in selling products from the market.
“All small boat owners and captains must exercise caution in their decisions when travelling in inclement weather,” said Western Provincial Police Commissioner (PPC) Wilken Miriki.
“It is always a wise idea for small boat owners to consider safety first before setting out to any destination,” said Superintendent PPC Miriki.
PPC Miriki added: “As a service provider, it is very important that boat owners ensure that they have the essentials such as life jackets, compasses, spare oars, water, spare fuel etc. ready before travelling and ensure that they gather the latest information on weather conditions.”
