Six candidates to run in 2024 MSIP election

Six contestants will compete in the upcoming Miss Solomon Islands 2024 Pageant (MSIP).

They are Ezinma Kausua (Miss Guadalcanal), Kerrie Faradatolo (Miss Tourism), Sharllyma Aruhane (Miss Coral Sea Resort and Casino), Elsie Polosavai (Miss Lauru), Azarinna Zolela Stevens (Miss SICAN) and Jayn Zayniellar Soakai (Miss Tulagi).

The contestants were officially unveiled today at a press conference held at the Pacific Crown Hotel.

Speaking to SIBC News, Lynette Adomea, Events Manager of MSIP, said this year’s pageant is one to watch and they have full confidence in the contestants.

“I think the level of girls we have on the team this year is very high and even though there are a few younger girls, they are very confident and very brave and we are very proud of them.”

“We also have older girls who are ready, who have gone to university, some have already started working, but from seeing them interact and start to build connections, I think it’s going to be a really special Solomon Islands pageant,” she said.

Contestants also had the opportunity today to choose the topic of their pre-pageant speeches, which were created around the pageant’s theme, “Empowering Women for Sustainable Development”.

Ms. Adomea said they decided to let the contestants choose their speech topics in advance so that there would be ample time to prepare their pre-competition speeches.

“This year is very different from previous years because we have plenty of time. Therefore, we decided to pick the topics for the pre-pageant speeches in advance, which also helps improve the scores and gives the girls time to prepare their speeches.”

After the formal introductions today, the contestants will also visit the Prime Minister’s Office as a group for the first time tomorrow.

Meanwhile, contestant Elsie Polosavai, who is representing the people of Djoser Province, said she is looking forward to promoting the preservation of the region’s culture.

“One thing I want to promote at this event is the importance of preserving culture in a contemporary and modern way.”

“But it’s most important that we do it in a sensitive and culturally appropriate way so that we accurately represent our culture, customs and traditions.”

Ms Polosavaye returned to New Zealand earlier this week to compete in the pageant after being away from the country for more than a decade.

Reflecting on her return, Polosavaye said she expects to face some challenges but she is looking forward to the competition.

“While I represent the people of Rauru, as a province we have a lot of diversity in our cultures, so the challenge for me is how to present those cultures in an accurate and appropriate way that is inclusive of all people in Rauru.”

“But preparations for the competition are going well, I’ve met my team members and I believe our ideas mesh well. I’ve met my fellow players and I’m very happy to be with these beautiful ladies,” she said.

Miss Guadalcanal, Ezinma Kausua, also hopes her advocacy for women’s health in the pageant will bring about change for women and girls in her province.

“I think health is a big issue in Guadalcanal, especially for women, girls and even children.”

“So I hope that my health advocacy will help others stay healthy, and I know that by staying healthy, we can also contribute to the sustainable development of the country,” she said.

For contestant Azarina Zorella Stevens, she hopes that by participating in the Miss Solomon Islands pageant, she will encourage other women to get involved in climate advocacy in the country.
