President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi discussed threats in the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea with Eritrean Foreign Minister Osman Saleh on Thursday.

The meeting was held in the city of New Alamein.

Egyptian presidential spokesman Ahmed Fahmy said Sisi and Saleh expressed their eagerness to continue coordination and consultation at all levels to support regional security and stability.

During the meeting, Sisi expressed Egypt’s keenness to strengthen the good relations and cooperation between the two countries for the benefit of their peoples and the realization of common interests, taking into account the growing regional challenges, there is a need to intensify discussions on ways to address them.

Fahmi added that President Sisi also received a written communication from Eritrean Foreign Minister Isaias Afwerki, who expressed Eritrea’s appreciation for bilateral relations with Egypt and its eagerness to strengthen consultations on issues of mutual concern.

Tensions in the Horn of Africa escalated in January when Somaliland agreed to lease 20 kilometers of its coastline to Addis Ababa for 50 years, where it hopes to build a naval base and commercial port to give landlocked Ethiopia access to the Red Sea.

Following the agreement, Egypt reiterated its support for Somalia, its security and stability, and stressed the need to respect Somalia’s sovereignty over its land.

In February, Sisi discussed the latest developments in the Horn of Africa with Afwerki in Cairo, where they stressed the need to respect Somalia’s sovereignty.
