Foreign media quoted people familiar with the matter as reporting that the Biden administration of the United States plans to propose restrictions on Chinese automotive software as early as this month, which will include restrictions on the use and testing of China’s autonomous driving technology.

The report noted that the U.S. Commerce Department’s proposal may include a transition period to allow automakers to find new sources of supply domestically or obtain supplies from U.S. trading partners.

A U.S. Commerce Department spokesman said in a statement that it is concerned about national security risks associated with connected vehicle technology and will publish proposed rules addressing “issues of specific concern” and will solicit comments at that time.

The current phase of restrictions is expected to focus on software and systems that can collect vehicle data, but could also include any hardware systems with embedded software, the people said. A new round of restrictions could target hardware for connected and self-driving cars in the future.

Chinese officials have denied U.S. claims that Chinese-made cars pose a security threat and accused the Biden administration of unfairly suppressing Chinese companies.
