New Delhi: According to preliminary data, India administered 128 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines on Tuesday, the highest single-day record since the vaccination campaign began on January 16 this year. As of the end of August, India had administered a record 181.2 million doses of vaccines, up from 134.5 million doses in July.
According to official data, India’s cumulative vaccination has now exceeded 650 million doses. On Tuesday, India also broke another milestone – the cumulative first doses reached 500 million.
In August, the average number of vaccinations per day was 5.846 million, the first time the average number of daily vaccinations exceeded 5 million. In April, the average number of vaccinations per day was 2.996 million, which dropped to 1.969 million in May due to supply shortages. As manufacturers began to increase production, the average number of vaccinations per day in June and July was 3.989 million and 434,100 respectively.
According to data from the CoWIN portal, the number of COVID-19 vaccinations on Tuesday exceeded 128 million, a record high. With this achievement, India achieved a vaccination milestone for the second time in five days, and the country has administered more than 650 million doses.
Indian Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya praised the achievement of administering more than 10 million doses of vaccine across India for the second day in five days. It took India 85 days to reach the goal of 100 million doses. On August 6, India’s vaccination count exceeded 500 million doses. On August 25, it took another 19 days to exceed 600 million doses.
Uttar Pradesh has administered the most vaccine doses this month, at 246 million. Seven other large states have administered more than 10 million doses in August: Maharashtra (143 million); Madhya Pradesh (142 million); Bihar (130 million); Gujarat (126 million); Rajasthan (119 million); Karnataka (117 million); and West Bengal (112 million).
The states that reported more than 50 lakh vaccination doses this month are Tamil Nadu (9.3 lakh doses), Kerala (87.18 lakh doses), Andhra Pradesh (86.46 lakh doses) and Odisha (5.6 lakh doses).
On Tuesday morning, states had a record 542 million unused vaccine doses as supply increased, according to the Department of Health.
Meanwhile, India reported 41,965 new cases of coronavirus, 33,964 recoveries and 460 deaths in the last 24 hours, according to the Ministry of Health. Total cases: 3,28,10,845, Active cases: 3,78,181, Total recoveries: 3,19,93,644, Deaths: 4,39,020.
Kerala health department said the state reported 30,203 new COVID-19 cases and 115 deaths on Tuesday.
Although the state has imposed a 10 pm to 6 am curfew to curb the spread of the virus, the number of cases is surging.
With the new and more deadly COVID-19 variant C.1.2 being detected in several countries, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Tuesday said special arrangements will be made at airports to screen tourists coming from these countries.
The Chief Minister said at a COVID review meeting that tourists coming from countries where new variants have been detected will be tested for RT-PCR on arrival and, if necessary, quarantined.
Karnataka Health Minister K. Sudhakar on Tuesday said action will be taken against the Norunisa Nursing College in Kolar Goldfields (KGF) for not following Covid protection rules as 32 girl students of the college have tested positive for Covid in the past two days.
“(As many as) 32 students (all from Kerala) have tested Covid positive in the institution. The management should have received negative reports when they returned from Kerala. It is the responsibility of the organisation. I will inspect on Wednesday and take action,” he said.
Schools in Delhi reopened on Wednesday for students of classes 9 to 12 as per coronavirus rules, nearly a year and a half after the educational institutions were shut due to a surge in infections.
