Today marks a year since Sinead O’Connor passed away. Today we invite you to listen to her moving and poignant performance on Irish TV’s Late Late Show 31 years ago.
O’Connor and other Irish celebrities were given a makeover during a special episode of The Late Late Show on March 26, 1993, when the legendary Guy Byrne was still hosting the show.
RTÉ said the makeover was a boost to charity fundraising cradleproviding assistance to children and refugees displaced by the Yugoslav war.
“Sinéad, any chance?” Byrne asked O’Connor, who transformed into a “goddess” in the episode.
She smiled and replied, “Can I sing a little song for you?”
Byrne was clearly confident in O’Connor’s talent, and he brought her to the microphone.
“Is it because you look so different that the song is so different?” Byrne asked.
“No, I was going to do that, but then I decided not to,” O’Connor said softly. “I changed my mind.”
Bourne gave her some space and said, “Well, you just do your thing. It’s fine. Whatever you do, Sinead, it’s fine.”
O’Connor sang alone a powerful rendition of “Let Me Be Your Channel of Peace,” also known as “The Prayer of St. Francis” or “The Peace Prayer.”
The song ends with the words: “Through death, we gain eternal life.”

O’Connor’s 1993 rendition of the hymn felt particularly poignant because her family confirmed on July 26, 2023 The Irish singer-songwriter has died.
Her family said in a statement: “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Sinead.”
“Her family and friends are devastated and ask for privacy at this very difficult time.”
An autopsy confirmed O’Connor died of natural causes.
