Simón Reyes, former historical leader of Bolivia’s Central Obrera (COB), died Thursday morning at the age of 79 from a lung infection in a clinic in the city of Santa Cruz, his family reported.

Reyes was hospitalized for 14 days in the intensive care unit of the Incor Clinic in the capital of Santa Cruz at around 8:00 a.m., his daughter Ana María reported.

He said no decision had been made on his father’s veil and burial site, but said it was possible his body would be cremated and his ashes stored in a sarcophagus.

Next January 5, Simón Reyas will be 80 years old. His trade union life, first as a mining leader and later as a COB leader, was characterized by the fight to defend workers’ rights and the restoration of democracy in the country.
