New Democratic Party Chairperson Jeanne Simmons will not protect any party member who uses Surinamese state resources to enrich themselves unjustly.

The previous New Democracy government of Desi Bouterse also promised to fight corruption but was mired in a decade of painful corruption scandals, with cronies allocated land and awarded multimillion-dollar contracts.
One of those currently involved in the criminal case is fugitive former finance minister Gillmore Hoefdraad.
Simmons said many of the country’s rules had been broken in recent years, but if it were up to her, more rules would be needed to at least reduce corruption.
