Simione Sevudredre has been a prominent figure in cultural advocacy and consultancy since founding Sau Vaka Cultural Consultancy in 2023. As founder of the Sau Vaka NGO, he is dedicated to empowering Indigenous women, youth, children and leaders by leveraging contextualized cultural practices in rights, education, health and social cohesion within local iTaukei communities and the diaspora. His work aims to disseminate and represent iTaukei traditional knowledge and culture to communities and stakeholders at local, regional and international levels.
Simione’s career has spanned a number of influential roles. He was Chief Administrator for Culture and Language at the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs from 2009 to 2022. Prior to this, he was an Indigenous Documentary Producer for Fiji Television Limited from 2006 to 2008 and a Secondary School English as a Second Language Teacher at the Ministry of Education from 1994 to 2005.
Simione has more than a decade of experience in cross-cultural communication, planning and executing UNESCO country projects. He has a reputation for problem solving, increasing client satisfaction and driving operational improvements. Known for his attention to detail and organizational skills, he is a passionate trainer who is motivated to learn, grow and excels in tailoring effective face-to-face negotiations.
Mr Sevudredre’s expertise includes serving as a translator and interpreter for the Fijian Parliament, a content specialist and cultural advisor for the Pacific Islands Gallery at the Australian Museum in Sydney, and as the Cultural Dialogue Program Coordinator at the Fiji Museum. He has also been an adjunct lecturer at the iTaukei Studies Centre at the University of Fiji and has been a member of several influential committees and planning teams.
Simione’s ongoing projects include the promotion and translation of Traditional Knowledge and Cultural Expressions legislation, which will be submitted as a bill to Parliament in June 2023, and serving as a member of the planning committee for an online seminar for the International Research Center for Intangible Cultural Heritage of Asia and the Pacific (IRCI) in Japan. His upcoming NGO, SAUVAKA, will make further progress in cultural advocacy and empowerment.
His contributions are not limited to his roles in these institutions. Simione was a project partner and cultural policy expert in the development of Pacific cultural tourism guides. He also played a key role in the sustainable tourism assessments of ten World Heritage sites in the Pacific, including the site assessments for the town of Levuka in Fiji and East Rennell in the Solomon Islands.
Currently, Simione is overseeing the development of e-learning modules for the Pacific Cultural Tourism Professional Certificate Program, a groundbreaking initiative in the Pacific that aims to help national tourism organizations and the private sector recognize the importance of using traditional practices as a learning platform for tourists, rather than just commercializing them.
