Ye Xiaoyun mentioned in an interview that the team used soft robots and smart pads to develop a smart night brace for early adolescent primary scoliosis. It uses moisture-absorbing and breathable fabrics and airbag support belts. The built-in Bluetooth sensor monitors the wearer’s sleeping position and can automatically adjust and correct the strength and position. She revealed that the invention has been patented in the mainland and will apply to the United States next. The Hong Kong University Shenzhen Hospital has expressed interest, and clinical trials are being carried out in Hong Kong. Each set costs about HK$2,000.

Wireless ECG patch for critical care monitoring

The electrode patch is only 181 microns thick and weighs 0.489 grams. It is elastic and breathable and will not cause skin inflammation. It can also collect ECG data in real time through a smartphone. It has been used in outpatient clinics, including early detection of heart disease and monitoring of patients in intensive care units during and after surgery.

Chip to detect microbial contamination in real time

Assistant Professor of the Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology at PolyU, co-founder of PolyU scholar-led start-up “Yuxin Co., Ltd.”Cai Songlinhis team won the gold medal for the “Fishing Core: A chip laboratory for real-time detection of microorganisms and pollutants”, which can prevent the outbreak of microbial pathogens or the spread of pollution.

Another gold medal winner, the “Thick Glassy Carbon Preparation and Heat Treatment Property Adjustment Solution”, was developed by Yang Yi, a PhD student from PolyU’s Department of Mechanical and Engineering and founder of PolyU start-up Carbon Cable Technology Co., Ltd. It can fine-tune the composition of glassy carbon and extend the product’s service life.

The results were the best among the five local universities participating in the competition. He emphasized that PolyU will continue to cultivate outstanding scientific research talents, cooperate with the government to promote industry-university-research cooperation, and help Hong Kong develop new quality productivity.
