Danaya District

Danaya is one of the 33 districts of Malaiya County, 85 km from Sigiri. It was founded by a farmer in 1981 and was granted district status in 2016 after several administrative struggles. However, the district today is severely lacking in necessary infrastructure such as health posts, roads and schools. This is what a Guineematin.com correspondent based in the area observed on the ground.

Danaya Health Station

Danaya, an agro-pastoral district in the shadow of Mount Badamakulu, is difficult to reach and although the constituency was recently expanded to over 1,500 voters according to statistics from the last presidential election, it still faces many challenges.

El hadj Mamadi Keïta, Regional Director

In 1981, Elhadj Mamadi Keïta, one of the region’s pioneers, settled in this previously uninhabited area in search of agricultural land. However, mining activities largely dominate the local economy, as is the case throughout the Siguiri region.

Although Danaya became a county in 2016, the lack of infrastructure and difficult transportation still exist. The area has about 2,000 residents but no fully functional health station.

Onicame Foromo, Director of the Health Station

“Patients are sometimes placed in the private homes of health personnel, exposing the latter to high risks,” explained Onikame Foromo, head of the post.

Agriculture remains the main activity in Danaya, but many young people are now turning to mining to earn an income, partly because of the lack of classrooms, which causes them to drop out of school.

Residents, especially women, also face enormous difficulties, such as a lack of local markets and adequate medical facilities. Precarious childbirth conditions are also a reality for many local women.

With the rapid population growth in Sigiri, Danaya district could become the “el Dorado” and attract gold diggers.
