The meteorological department said that due to the active southwest monsoon, the current showers and strong winds on the island are likely to continue.

Regional Weather Forecast:

– **Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-West and Southern Provinces:**

– Frequent showers are expected.

– Heavy rains exceeding 100 mm are likely to occur in parts of Western Province, Sabaragamuwa and Nuwara Eliya districts.

– **Uva Province and Ampara, Batticaloa Districts:**

– Showers or thundershowers are expected in the evening or overnight.

Wind conditions:

– **Western slopes of the Central Hills, Northern Province, North Central Province, Western Province, Southern Province, North Western Province, Trincomalee District and Monalagala District:**

– Strong winds of 50-60 km/h may occur at times.

Marine Weather Forecast:

– **General Sea Conditions:**

– Due to the active southwest monsoon, the seas around the islands will be very rough.

– The Navy and fishing communities are advised not to venture into the waters until further notice.

– **Wave Height:**

– Sea level rise is expected to be between 2.5m and 3.5m in the offshore area from Kalpitiya to Pottuville via Colombo, Galle and Hambantota.

– Swells are likely in the offshore areas of Kalpitiya to Matara via Colombo and Galle due to sea swells.

– **Sea from Puttalam via Colombo to Mattala:**

– There may be showers or thundershowers at times.

– Predominantly southwest wind with speeds between 40-50 km/h, increasing to 60-70 km/h at times.

– The sea will be very rough, especially during thundershowers, with brief strong gusts of wind.

Precautions:

– Residents in the affected areas should be alert to possible heavy rain and strong winds, as these weather conditions may cause dangers such as fallen trees, landslides and flooding.

– Fishermen and naval personnel are advised to heed the advice and avoid going out to sea during this period to ensure their safety.
