Another person has died in a road accident in County Donegal.
A woman in her 80s has died in a traffic accident in the village of St Johnston this afternoon, the latest tragedy to hit the county’s roads in the past week.
The collision brings the county’s death toll from Saturday night to today to four.
The latest tragedy occurred at 2pm this afternoon on Church Street.
It is understood the tragedy involved a truck and a pedestrian.
The woman is a local.
The local community was shocked by the tragedy, with many neighbours and friends in the village visibly upset.
The woman’s death brings the number of people killed on Donegal roads so far this year to 12, two more than in the whole of last year.
The tragic week-long incident began at 11.15pm last Saturday when two cousins were involved in a car accident at the Cross at Quigley’s Point.
The front seat passenger of the car, Kian Dawson, 16, died at the scene.
His cousin Eoghan (20) was rushed to Belfast’s Royal Victoria Hospital for treatment for serious injuries sustained in the crash.
However, Eoghan sadly passed away on Tuesday.
An 87-year-old woman was rushed to University Hospital Sligo with serious injuries following a two-car collision in Inver, South Donegal, last Sunday morning.
Sadly, a well-known and well-liked Donegal town woman, Lady Elizabeth Cave, died from her injuries on Wednesday.
A man from Austria has been charged with dangerous driving in connection with the crash that killed Ms Cave.
A Garda spokesperson confirmed: “Gardaí and emergency services were called just after 2pm after a woman in her 80s was struck by a lorry in Church Street in the village.
“She was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later. The coroner has been notified and her body will be taken to Letterkenny Hospital mortuary where a post-mortem examination will be carried out. The driver of the lorry was not injured.
“The road is currently closed to allow police collision investigators to conduct their enquiries and diversions are in place. The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) has also been notified.”
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the collision to come forward.
“Any road user who has camera footage, including dashcam footage, and was in the vicinity of St Johnston at the time of the collision is asked to provide that footage to gardaí who are investigating.”
