Smart cities are developing rapidly. Recently, Shenzhen’s low-altitude economy has demonstrated its dual significance of innovation and practicality. By applying drones and other low-altitude flying equipment, Shenzhen has not only greatly improved logistics efficiency, but also promoted a new model of urban management and services. Some of these innovative projects are worthy of reference for Hong Kong.

For example, citizens can enjoy drone food delivery service in Shenzhen Bay Park, which indicates that the low-altitude economy can be integrated into daily life. Drones departing from the Coastal City business district can deliver food to the park within 10 minutes. The emergence of this service reflects the potential of low-altitude logistics in improving the convenience of life.

Shenzhen’s low-altitude logistics is not limited to the delivery of catering and daily necessities. In Luohu District, valuables can also be transported by drone, shortening the 30-minute drive to 12 minutes, showing the advantages of low-altitude logistics in improving transportation efficiency and safety. Shenzhen has also opened cross-sea low-altitude logistics routes to further expand the application scope of the low-altitude economy.

In addition, low-altitude flight technology is currently widely used in public services in cities, for example, using drones to deliver blood packages or assist in extinguishing fires in super-high-rise buildings. These applications play an important role in improving the emergency response capabilities and service efficiency of urban emergencies.

The development of the low-altitude economy is not limited to logistics applications. Shenzhen has also explored low-altitude transportation, such as urban commuting through electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOL), which greatly shortens the travel time between Shenzhen and Zhuhai. In addition, helicopter operators are also actively expanding intra-city commuting and inter-city flight services to enrich the low-altitude transportation industry.

In order to support the sustainable development of the low-altitude economy, Shenzhen not only innovates in technology and application, but also implements pilot projects at the policy and regulatory levels. In 2023, Shenzhen issued the country’s first legislation on the low-altitude economy, clarifying the guiding role of fiscal funds and encouraging investment in the low-altitude economy industry. Various districts have supported policies to accelerate the regional development of the low-altitude economy.

As Shenzhen strives to build a comprehensive demonstration zone for low-altitude economic industries, it will further improve the industrial development service system, expand low-altitude application scenarios, strengthen infrastructure construction, provide more support for the construction of the “Sky City”, and enable the low-altitude economy to be more widely promoted and applied in Shenzhen and even across the country.
