From the 1980s to date, the Sharjah Cultural Project has served Arab writers from the East to the West of our great homeland through multiple channels of cultural, honorary and creative exchange and interaction. If one of us recalls the founding decade of Emirati culture, he will recall the presence of Youssef Idris, a master of the short story from Egypt and the Arab world, around whom Emirati and Arab writers living in Sharjah gathered at that time. He will also recall the real poetry at an evening hosted in his honor in Sharjah by Abdullah Al-Baradouni more than three decades ago. Various Arab poets of contemporary poetry read in Sharjah in the eighties and nineties, when the Sharjah Cultural Project was renewing its projects and activities and developing them culturally and administratively.
Walking through the Sharjah open air cultural area: Ahmed Dahbour, Ibrahim Nasrallah, Abdul Wahab Al-Bayati, Al-Jawahiri, Haider Mahmoud, Adonis, Ibrahim Al-Koni, Jabra Ibrahim Jabra, Qasim Haddad, Alawi Al-Hashemi, Ali Al- Sharqawi, Joseph Harb, Abdullah Al-Sikhan, Saif Al-Rahbi and Habib Al-Zeyoudi, Shawqi Bazi’, and other poets, novelists, critics, artists and playwrights: Jawad Al-Asadi, Naji Al-Ali and Nazih Khater, to name a few. These and others were the pillars of culture, art and literature in the eighties and nineties.
The Sharjah Biennial attracts Arab visual artists, the Sharjah International Book Fair attracts publishers and founders of ancient Arab publishing houses, educated Arab playwrights and drama professors. Sharjah Drama Day was and still is a wedding for them and their families. Similarly, the Poetry Festival remains an Arab celebration of Sharjah’s poets, from which the idea of the Arab Poetry House was born.
Let’s be objective and realistic: Sharjah is the capital of Arab writers. In the past decade, the Sharjah Ministry of Culture has established regular exchanges with Arab writers from various countries by paying tribute to ancient writers.
The open cultural air of Sharjah is breathed and filled by hundreds of poets, men and women, playwrights, men and women writers from throughout the Arab world, which is the direct translation of “Sharjah, the capital of Arab culture”, and also the emirate where Arab and international cultural projects are constantly renewed and developed.
