Palau students excited about judo and kimono activities
The Japanese Embassy successfully held the Japanese Culture Week on July 16day Until July 19dayThis marks two important milestones in 2024:day The anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Palau and the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Palau and Japanday Independence Day. This cultural celebration coincides with theday Pacific Islands Leaders Meeting (PALM10) held in Tokyo on July 16day Until July 18day.
Throughout the week, Judo coaches Ms. Nae Udaka and Ms. Yuka Watabe from V-Technology and Kimono Master Ms. Yuko Nakajima from Nakakoma Orimono hosted cultural exchange activities in several schools in Koror, Airai, Peleliu and Angar through presentations and demonstrations. Students from Kayangel Primary School participated in the event together with students from Airai Primary School. The students had the opportunity to learn about the history and significance of Judo, a non-combat martial arts form, and the traditional Japanese attire of Kimono. The joy on the children’s faces lit up as the girls donned kimonos with flower patterns and the boys donned black kimonos usually worn by samurai. In addition to the kimono fitting session, the students were excited to learn Judo techniques and try out their newly learned techniques on two Judo champions, Ms. Udaka and Ms. Watabe. The event definitely increased the students’ interest in learning Judo.
It was an exciting week of events that highlighted the value of mutual cultural understanding to foster deeper connections between our two countries.
