The purpose of the tour is for the CDS to convey his vision and engage in direct dialogue with the troops under his command to gather first-hand information on the conditions they work and live in. The CDS will also meet with representatives of the fraternal security services, community and religious leaders and relevant stakeholders to engage with them constructively on the need to preserve and sustain peace.
Commander Bach stressed that their forces are currently facing challenges with personnel shortages, which he said affects their operational efficiency and ability to maintain a sustained and effective security presence.
He also spoke of the need to increase training programs to improve the skills and capabilities of military personnel, especially in VIP protection, convoy operations and countering new and old threats.
He added that they also face logistical constraints which limit their forces. According to him, they lack troop-carrying vehicles, as well as combat equipment such as raincoats and communication equipment.
OC Bah expressed concern that if these limitations were not addressed, it could affect their operational readiness and effectiveness. He therefore requested cooperation and assistance from the headquarters.
CDS Mamat O. Cham acknowledged the challenges posed and mentioned The only limit is what they don’t have. / What the country doesn’t have.
He, however, assured them that they would be provided with the best resources needed to discharge their duties as the importance of the National Guard Battalion could not be overemphasized.
CSD Cham pledged to provide comprehensive training to soldiers, including capacity building. He stressed the importance of incorporating technological advancements, such as installing cameras for security surveillance, to mitigate future border conflicts and road accidents. Specifically, he stressed the importance of safe driving practices to prevent unnecessary accidents.
Cham stressed the importance of protecting lives, stressing that “soldiers and drivers must put safety first to effectively perform their duties and protect national sovereignty.” He added that measures will be taken to ensure that drivers receive the necessary training to enhance their ability to protect themselves and others.
Lieutenant Commander Cham told the soldiers that they will not compete with other sister security forces and their job is to protect the Gambian people. He revealed that they are working on providing accommodation for the soldiers and said private investors will be involved to ensure they have a good standard of living.
He concluded by revealing that a Terms of Service (TOD) will be signed soon to increase their income and encourage them to engage in agriculture, growing rice and vegetables to support the military economy and the country.
