The provinces of Guanacaste and Puntarenas were affected to varying degrees by the heavy rainfall that fell on Friday night. Reported incidents included flooded homes, falling materials, route closures, and overflowing streams and rivers.
According to the National Emergency Committee (CNE), 64 incidents were recorded as of 10:36 pm. Lepanto, Nandayul, Paquera and Liberia are the worst affected. In the last state, the opening of temporary shelters is being assessed due to flooding caused by the overflowing of several streams and the Liberia River, affecting the communities of El Fosforo, San Rafael de Koulubande and Capulin.
The Costa Rican Red Cross reported at 9:54 p.m. that it had deployed units in Kulubande and Guardia following reports of damage caused by the rains. In Kulubande, material fell on four houses, while in Guardia, 20 houses were flooded. Due to this situation, five people were transferred to temporary shelters.
Additionally, National Road 21 between Nandayul and Nicoya was closed due to overflowing streams, CNE reported. Road 160 to Cóbano was also paralyzed by landslides and overflowing rivers.
The committee explained that the overflowing of streams and rivers is due to high soil saturation, coupled with the rainfall that fell in these areas tonight. The first responding agencies that make up the Municipal Emergency Committee (CME) continue to operate and maintain monitoring and surveillance of risk locations.
