Xinhua News Agency, Freetown, August 12 (Reporter Chen Cong) The National Disaster Management Bureau of Sierra Leone said on the 12th that a four-story building in the country’s capital Freetown collapsed on Monday, and several people are expected to be buried under the rubble.
Mohammed Bah, communications director of Nigeria’s disaster management department, told Xinhua over the phone that emergency rescue teams quickly rushed to the site of the collapsed building and worked tirelessly to rescue people who might be trapped under the rubble.
He said preliminary investigations showed that substandard construction workmanship was the cause of the accident.
The building’s collapse comes as the region has been hit by heavy rains since last month, which have caused flash flooding and eroded vital infrastructure such as roads and bridges.
