MOGADISHU (HOL) — Clashes between Southwest State security forces and clan militias in Yakbari Wene District of Lower Shabelle State on Thursday are feared to result in casualties.
According to residents, the clash took place when Dervish forces in Southwest State launched an operation to remove illegal roadblocks set up by militias.
The roadblocks were reportedly used to extort money from people and public vehicles travelling on the road connecting Wanlaweyn and Burhakaba areas.
Southwest state security minister Hassan Abdul Kadir Mohammed said the government initially tried to negotiate with the militias who set up the roadblocks but they refused to cooperate, leading to the clashes.
The minister stressed that the government would not tolerate the establishment of unauthorized checkpoints that disrupt public order and exploit civilians.
