The press release further condemned the newly elected authorities’ failure to engage in dialogue and consultation, or to find a coherent solution to the crisis. “The state will not bring order to the media sector through a multi-faceted pressure agenda (tax inspections, confiscation of FADP, formal demands for TDS to pay royalties, termination and suspension of commercial agreements for public institutions to pay).”
Antoine Bélanger, Secretary General of the International Federation of Journalists, said that independent media plays an important role in strengthening democracy, good governance and the rule of law. “We know that the media around the world is facing a huge crisis, and governments cannot ignore the call for dialogue and consultation to save the media, especially a government that has previously provided support to the media. Any reluctance to engage in a productive dialogue with CAP indicates a dangerous trend that will undermine the role of independent media in informing the public and mobilizing citizens to participate in democracy.”
The International Federation of Journalists urges the Senegalese government to do everything possible to engage in a constructive dialogue with CAP to open a path that can curb the media closures and save the jobs of many journalists and media workers.
