Chicago (USA). Democrat Mark Kelly, who has served as a pilot in the US Armed Forces, a NASA astronaut and as a senator from Arizona for four years, explained in an interview with EFE that his new mission is to put Kamala Harris in the White House and send Donald Trump to the “dustbin of history” once and for all.
Kelly, 60, was considered by the Harris campaign as a possible running mate and vice presidential candidate, but the Democratic team ultimately chose Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, whose personal image could attract votes from white working-class people in the Midwest.
When asked by EFE in the hallway of the Chicago stadium where the Democratic National Convention is being held, Kelly simply smiled in response if he would be willing to serve as vice president.
“I’m glad I was able to do everything I could to get Kamala Harris and Tim Waltz to the finish line,” he responded, before saying on a more personal note that Waltz and his wife, Gabby Giffords, have been “terrific friends” for a long time.
The reason, he explained, was that Waltz, before becoming governor of Minnesota, served in the lower house from 2007 to 2019, which then overlapped with his wife, Gabby Giffords, who entered Congress in the same year, 2007, but had to resign in 2012 after she was seriously injured in a shooting attack against her.
Kelly went out of his way to praise Waltz, who will speak tonight at the Democratic National Convention, for his 24 years of military experience in various units and positions in the National Guard, his career as a high school teacher, and coaching football at a Minnesota school.
“He’s a great running mate for Kamala Harris, and they’re both going to defeat Donald Trump and consign him to the dustbin of history once and for all,” he said gleefully.
Kelly is convinced that Harris will be the next president of the United States. “The contrast between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris couldn’t be more stark,” he said.
He said that while former President Trump wanted to “drag” the United States back to the past, the vice president is “destined to lead the country into the future” and his policies will benefit all Americans.
Kelly, who will give his own speech before the Democratic conclave on Thursday, has pledged to do everything possible to get both parties a win in Arizona, a key battleground state that Democrat Joe Biden won in 2020 but ultimately fell to Republican Trump in 2016.
Kelly, who is considered the heir apparent to Republican John McCain’s seat and, like him, is known as an independent, is enthusiastic about Harris’s campaign and said he could sense an “unusual enthusiasm” when he traveled with her to campaign in Arizona last week.
“I’ve never seen anything like this in a political campaign, and I’ve been doing this for a while. It’s amazing,” he said.
Looking ahead, Kelly could play a key role in shaping Harris’ immigration policies. As a senator from Arizona, which borders Mexico, he has become one of the party’s most powerful voices on the issue, and he has spoken with the vice president about challenges at the border, according to his interview.
As she explained, Harris wanted to promote immigration legislation that Democrats and Republicans negotiated this year to strengthen the border and limit the asylum system, but which could not be approved in Congress because Trump pressured his fellow religious people not to do so. “Trump doesn’t want to do anything about immigration or border security, he’ll talk about it, but he doesn’t want to do anything about it,” Kelly attacked.
Instead, he pledged Harris’ commitment to ensuring that immigrant families who have lived in the United States for many years can be reunited, and therefore hopes to create a path for “Dreamers” — young people from the United States who enter the country irregularly as children — to obtain citizenship.
