A few years ago, I received an email from Godwin Cutajar, who I did not know personally. He was interested in self-portraits and had read an article I had written on the subject, which intrigued him. He told me that he was an artist who had been exploring self-portraits. As I was interested in the subject, I agreed to meet him on the island of Gozo where he lived, and I was impressed with what was to come.
Godwin has been exploring his own identity for many years, depicting his own image in various forms and different compositions. Apart from Antoine Camilleri and Antoni Calleja, few Maltese artists have been so interested in self-portraits.

The distorted facial expressions and the silent scream coming from the open mouth reminded me of Edvard Munch’s ScreamHis inverted composition is also a rather uncommon feature in Maltese self-portrait art.
