Abu Dhabi Health Services Company ‘Seha’, a subsidiary of the ‘PureHealth’ Group, has successfully used radioactive iodine to treat thyroid cancer in a 54-year-old patient with end-stage renal disease. This achievement represents an important advance in the use of radioactive iodine to treat patients who require dialysis during isolation and constitutes a new precedent for innovative, collaborative and safe healthcare practices. The treatment process was carried out in collaboration with experts from Sheikh Khalifa Medical City and SEHA’s Kidney Care Centre, both under SEHA, and was supervised by a team of experts in Nuclear Medicine, Endocrinology, Kidney Care, Dialysis Services, Environmental Health and Safety, and Engineering. This multidisciplinary approach was essential to meet the special challenges posed by the patient’s condition. Radioactive iodine is an important treatment in the post-operative phase of thyroid cancer and requires dose determination based on a step-by-step categorization of the patient’s likely risks.

The multidisciplinary team of thyroid cancer unanimously decided to perform a total thyroidectomy on the patient, followed by radioactive iodine treatment after surgery, with special attention paid to ensuring the safety and effectiveness of dialysis during the patient’s radiation isolation period.
