“I swear today that I will serve as president until the death of Ussenu Dabo,” Barrow said during the inauguration of the New Patriotic Party’s Political Bureau in Birkhama on Saturday.

In this regard, Mr. Njie clarified: “Clarification on the comments made by His Excellency President Adama Barrow at the opening of the Brikama NPP Bureau”

Reacting to claims circulating on social media that President Adama Barrow wished for the death of Alliance for Democracy and Progressives leader, Anam Usaynu Dabo, during the inauguration of the APP Brikama Zonal Bureau, the APP has categorically stated that President Adama Barrow never prayed or wished for the death of Mr. Anam Usaynu Dabo.

Firstly, it is important to understand the context of these comments. At the event in Brikama, President Barrow responded to remarks made by Mr. Dabo at a previous political rally in Brikama. Mr. Dabo claimed that the Fajara land allocated by the government to President Barrow belonged to the judiciary and the official residence of the Chief Justice. He also mentioned plans to set up a commission of inquiry into the seizure of President Barrow’s retirement residence.

In his response, President Barrow asked Mr. Dabo to provide legal documents to prove that the said land belonged to the Chief Justice. The President said that if there is such evidence, he will return the land. He also pointed out that Mr. Dabo, his wife and children were all given the land by the government, stressing that Mr. Dabo’s wife and children were given the land when he was dismissed from the government.

President Barrow’s comments were therefore made in the context of responding to Mr. Dabo’s threat to take back the land that was legally allocated to him by the state. The President expressed his determination to prevent Mr. Dabo from becoming president to avoid such an adverse event. The Secretary General and Leader of the New Patriotic Party highlighted this with a common saying, in Wolof: “dinga dey nyu sull la wai do giss lolu” and in Mandinka: “Ebaay faala baari etaay wo jayla.” These phrases are commonly used among various tribes in The Gambia and do not indicate harm or threat, but rather a challenge to negative intentions.

These remarks are clear and understandable, and simply express the president’s determination not to let his opponent become president. Therefore, it is extremely outrageous, absurd, and a deliberate distortion of the spirit of the remarks to interpret the president’s remarks as a hope that the Democratic Party leaders will die.

We understand that politics creates friction to promote interests and causes. The UDP is after power and will use whatever means to achieve it, but we believe that the Gambian people are smart enough to see through these tricks.

President Adama Barrow acknowledged the efforts of every citizen towards the development of the country regardless of their political views, including Mr. ANM Darboe. His Excellency wished Mr. Darboe and all Gambians good health, long life and happiness so that everyone can witness his government’s ambitious development agenda of democracy, human rights, rule of law, justice and development. The New Patriotic Party leader wished every Gambian to live the best life possible, regardless of political or religious beliefs. President Adama Barrow assured all Gambians and residents of The Gambia that they will always be safe and protected.
