Rubén Castillo, head of epidemiology at the Cochabamba Department Health Service (SEDES), ruled out this Tuesday evening a suspected case of Mpox, or better known as monkeypox, saying it was a case of chickenpox.

Castillo explained in an interview with Red Uno that he received a notification from the laboratory in the afternoon and the results confirmed that it was a case of chickenpox.

“This morning we announced a patient with signs and symptoms of monkeypox. In the afternoon we were informed by the National Reference Laboratory that this case was ruled out. It was simply a case of varicella, as we had initially suspected”.

Likewise, he said the patient is in stable condition and recovering and hence is expected to be discharged in the coming days.

“The positive thing is that our health system is alert to the emergency that is happening in the world, mainly in our region. So we have officially ruled it out. The patient is in a stable condition… He is concerned about the situation he is in, but he has taken the advice and treatment indicated and, as far as his initial condition is concerned, he is on the road to recovery.”

SEDES announced the suspected monkeypox case on Tuesday morning, causing a stir within the department.

The case is a 40-year-old man living in a tropical area who is currently in home isolation. The patient has symptoms such as general discomfort, fever, and rash all over the body.

Suspected Mpox patients will be found on the sixth day of the disease.
