Four bodies have been recovered from the wreckage of the superyacht that sank during the storm early Monday morning, the head of Sicily’s civil protection agency, Salvatore Cocina, confirmed to NBC News on Wednesday.
Rescue teams did not immediately confirm the names and genders of the victims. One person was confirmed dead earlier this week, bringing the total number of victims to five.
Two people are still missing and professional divers have warned that the search for the missing passengers will be difficult.
Italian rescuers have entered some rooms on the ship, but have been unable to access the bunk compartments where people on board may have been at the time of the accident. This makes it impossible for divers to see if anyone is inside.
The wreck lies at an angle at a depth of about 50 meters (164 feet), with narrow entrances, thick glass windows, and various objects and cables blocking access.
