Spanish archaeologists from the University of Cordoba have discovered the world’s oldest known liquid wine. The more than 2,000-year-old beverage was found in a funeral urn found in an ancient Roman tomb in the Andalusian city of Carmona.

Analysis of the liquid inside the glass container showed that it contained characteristic chemical elements similar to the composition of modern sherry.
The team determined that the material in the urn was not caused by a flood and was not condensed.
In addition to alcohol, scientists also found the cremated remains of a person in the container, as well as a gold ring engraved with the two-faced image of Janus.
Jose Rafael Ruiz Arrebola, who led the study, noted that the ornament was placed in the urn after its owner was cremated.
Microbiological analysis of the wine showed it was not toxic. But rather than trying to find out what the drink tasted like, since it had been in contact with the ashes of the Romans for more than two thousand years, the archaeologists only made a joke.
