Researchers have discovered three mysterious objects emitting light from a time when the universe was only 600 million to 800 million years old, or about 5% of its current age.

These objects appear to be filled with ancient stars and have surprising masses Black Hole – None of them were thought to be able to form at such an early stage of the Universe.

They discovered this after studying the intensity of different wavelengths of light. They appear to be very old stars, hundreds of millions of years old – but something that would not have been expected so early in the evolution of the universe.

They also found evidence for the presence of giant supermassive black holes in these objects, which they speculate could be up to 1,000 times more massive than the supermassive black hole in our own Milky Way galaxy.

Based on our current understanding of galaxy growth and black hole formation, such objects should not be found. They are thought to take billions of years to grow together.

“We have confirmed that these objects appear to be packed with ancient stars – hundreds of millions of years old – while the universe is only 600 million to 800 million years old. Remarkably, these objects have the earliest records of ancient starlight signals,” said lead author Bingjie Wang of Pennsylvania State University.

“Finding ancient stars in a very young universe was completely unexpected. The standard models of cosmology and galaxy formation are very successful, but these luminous objects don’t fit those theories very well.”

The researchers first discovered these objects almost exactly two years ago, in July 2022. Some time later, they nature Confirm the existence of the object.

At the time they thought the objects were galaxies, but further research provided more details about the light they were emitting, indicating how far away they were and where the bright light might be coming from.

However, these additional details only raise more questions. Researchers have never seen objects like these and have no idea how they were created.

“It’s very confusing,” said Joel Leja, assistant professor of astronomy and astrophysics at Penn State and co-author of both papers.

“You can make this phenomenon incompatible with our current models of the universe, but only if we can imagine some exotic, crazy-fast formation process at the beginning of time. This is without a doubt the most bizarre and interesting object I have ever seen in my career.”

Scientists hope to gain a better understanding of these objects with more observations, which will help explain which parts of the light come from the stars themselves and which parts may be thrown out by the black holes as they devour surrounding matter.

An article describing the discovery, “Ruby: Evolved stellar populations with extended formation histories at z ∼ 7–8 in candidate massive galaxies identified using JWST/NIRSpec,” was published in Astrophysical Journal Letters.
