The Master’s degree in Health Research Ethics is aimed primarily at lawyers and social scientists.

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa is an African health research ethics project that provides

A combination of modular and applied training, both online and face-to-face, as part of a structured Social Sciences Master’s programme specialising in Health Research Ethics.

Trainees will have the expertise to ensure that health research in Africa has the well-being of research participants, individuals and communities as its primary focus. A key focus of the training program is to develop expertise in research ethics. SARETI has been awarded a competitive grant from the Fogarty International Center (FIC) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to offer Master’s training in Research Ethics starting in 2025. The two-year program is intended for lawyers, social scientists and other professionals early in their careers working in health-related research and/or research ethics. The program will provide a comprehensive, advanced, multidisciplinary Master’s training in Research Ethics to a group of candidates from across Africa.

The SARETI Scholarship provides full financial support for Masters degree students for 2025/26. It includes:

  • travel
  • Course Fees
  • Living expenses while attending a live event in South Africa
  • Research costs

Ability to travel to South Africa for 6 months of contact study in the first year (2025) and 1-2 weeks of contact study in the second year (2026)

Possess an eligible previous degree, preferably in Law or Social Sciences, certified by SAQA NQF 8 or higher

Involved in health research ethics, health-related research or law and/or willing to serve as a volunteer on a research ethics committee in their country of origin

Living in Africa

*Self-funded or externally sponsored candidates are also welcome to apply.
