In order to solve the housing problem of low-income groups in Suriname, President Chandrikapersad Santokhi awarded Housing Incentive Certificates (HIC) to 49 applicants in the Saramacca district.
The certificate enables them to receive subsidies.
Available housing solutions include building new homes, extending or renovating homes. The housing incentive certificate presentation ceremony was attended by Saramacca District Commissioner Sherin Bansi-Durga, Project Director Mark Rommy, NGO representative Panchoe Udairadj, SPSB representative Thessa Warsodikromo, Project Director Mark Rommy and his team.
After the presentation of housing incentive certificates in Nickeri and Paramaribo, the ceremony is now also taking place in Saramacca. The aim of these awards is to support citizens in need of housing solutions.
The target of supporting 3,775 citizens with housing solutions has now been achieved by about 20%.
Citizens can still apply for a housing incentive certificate if they meet the requirements and have not yet reached the target.
The subsidies vary depending on the nature of the project. “To date, 63 houses have been completed or renovated under the AHP project. Completion work is ongoing every day, with several houses at various stages of construction.
“The AHP program is an ongoing process designed to help as many citizens as possible meet their housing needs,” said Program Director Mark Rommy.
He stressed that the AHP project is currently being implemented in various regions and the next step will be to implement the project in the country.
Santokhi said the AHP project is funded by the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB). US$ 35 million has been provided for this purpose.
He stressed that there is still a lot of work to be done. “We have only reached 20%, there is still 80% to go,” the head of state said.
