President Chan Santohi wants everyone, especially the vulnerable in all regions and the interior, to have access to food basket shops. He decided to expand the food basket and launch an affordable food program with the participation of community organizations. The President will take action to further develop the food program and make it more widely available.

Santokhi held a meeting with the Foodbasket team. It aims to provide basic food items to all sections of society at the most affordable prices. He wanted to get a comprehensive picture of how many food basket stores there are, whether they can meet the demand for cheap food items among the needy, and whether the number of food basket stores should be expanded.

The meeting discussed the status of the “food basket” project and whether the provisions for providing cheap food to the poor are being met. In addition, the President made some suggestions, including the adoption of a voucher system that would allow the needy to choose which products to buy. They could make their own food packs that would meet the basic needs of the needy and provide them at 25% of the price.

“Screening and monitoring must be done in a way that ensures that the target groups that are supposed to be eligible are actually eligible,” the head of state stressed, according to the Surinamese Communications Agency. President Santohi has instructed the team to study the possibility of doing all this and will hold another meeting in a week to further discuss the possibilities.
