NASSAU, Bahamas, July 31, 2024 – New Beaches Exuma to Hire 850 Sandals Employees Emerald Bay has announced it will undergo an approximately $100 million transformation to become “Beaches Exuma,” a larger resort that will sit on the same land.
During this reconstruction, the resort will be temporarily closed beginning August 15. We anticipate the construction phase to last six to eight months. Sandals has assured the government that the temporary closure is necessary to protect the safety of employees and guests while the resort undergoes extensive renovations.
An estimated 400 jobs will be created during the construction phase, and the construction and renovation will create other opportunities for local contractors and other businesses on the island.
While our island will experience temporary disruption, this investment will be a significant addition to our community. Exuma has experienced significant economic growth over the past few years, with jobs available to nearly every Exumaan who wants one.
Exuma Beaches will add to our island’s success, employing more than 850 people and significantly increasing local employment and family-centered entrepreneurial opportunities.
Impact on Current Employees: Employment, Skill Development and Relief Opportunities Currently, approximately 425 Bahamians work at Sandals Emerald Bay, of which approximately 200 are from Exuma.
During the temporary closure, dozens of employees will be retained to protect and manage the facility. The company will work to redeploy as many workers as possible to other Sandals facilities. In fact, one-on-one training began this afternoon and will continue over the next two days, covering options offered by the company, including lean staff and transfer to facilities in the Turks and Caicos Islands for experience sharing.
We will do everything we can to provide support and help impacted workers transition smoothly. On August 9, we will host a Job and Entrepreneurship Expo for Exuma residents, which will include representatives from all existing hotels and new developers. The job fair provides an opportunity for our residents to gain employment and upgrade their skills in preparation for the many opportunities that New Exuma Beach has to offer. The expansion of the resort will expand the market for existing and new Bahamian businesses, including family-friendly restaurants and events.
Current employees of Sandals Emerald Bay will be given priority for employment at Beaches Exuma.
Any residents who need help obtaining NIB benefits should apply at a job fair or at the TeamCooper office in Exuma to receive assistance to facilitate their application.
