A double murder suspect was captured hiding in dense bushland during a massive manhunt in Samoa on Tuesday.

The 58-year-old farmer is accused of shooting and killing two men, including a lead homicide detective.

Samoan police confirmed he was arrested in Fasito’o on the northwest coast of Upolu.

A team of 20 detectives and tactical unit police launched a search for the suspected gunman.

Police say Detective Sergeant Peniamina Perite was investigating a horrific domestic dispute and was trying to arrest the suspect when he was shot with a .22 caliber rifle.

Deputy Police Commissioner Papalii Monalisa told New Zealand Pacific Radio that police shootings like this were extremely rare in New Zealand and the community was shocked and angry.

“We haven’t had a case like this since 1996, so it’s very unexpected and regrettable that this happened over a family dispute,” Monalisa said.

She said Perritt was a dedicated and exemplary police officer who died at the scene when he and other unarmed officers tried to arrest the suspect.

“The homicide unit was investigating a domestic shooting that occurred the night before where the suspect shot and killed his ex-wife’s new husband,” Monalisa said.

“So this is a domestic case where the ex-husband shot his wife’s new husband. The deceased also had other injuries from a machete.

“We cannot confirm whether the deceased on Sunday night died from gunshot wounds or from the machete wounds used by the suspect.”

An autopsy is needed to determine the cause of death of the 62-year-old man from Nofoali.

She said it was a traumatic and difficult time for the Samoan police and the officers accompanying Perrit would be provided with support and counselling.
